COLLABORATIONS

SOUTH SOUTH’s core activity has been facilitating new connections within cultural ecosystems across the Global South and beyond through series of remarkable collaborations with various entities. This has included supporting non-profits (RAW Material CompanyĀ in Dakar, Green Papaya Art ProjectsĀ in Manila and Casa do PovoĀ SĆ£o Paulo); adding to major museum collections (El Museo del BarrioĀ in New York City); working with Global South art fairs (SPā€“ARTEĀ in Sāo Paulo and FNB Art Joburg in Johannesburg); forming residencies with foundations through the generosity of SOUTH SOUTH ambassadors (Jorge M. PĆ©rez andĀ El Espacio 23); and working with numerous curators from across the Global South and the diaspora. All of these initiatives have revolved around the programmes and artists of our core gallery membership, as well as independent artists introduced through the curatorial voices that we have engaged with.

TALKS

Often accompanying the FILM programme, and sometimes stand alone, SOUTH SOUTH presents an ongoing programme of TALKS. The platform has been widely praised for the caliber of both the speakers and quality of the content, featuring some of the most significant and influential artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, thinkers within the contemporary art world in conversation. This has included artists such as Ernesto Neto, Otobong Nkanga,Ā Kader Attia,Ā William Kentridge,Ā Yinka Shonibare CBE,Ā Danh Vo, Minerva Cuevas, Pio Abad, Coco Fusco and Helena Uambembe; and curators such as Elvira Dyangani Ose,Ā Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, Fernanda Brenner, Gabi Ngcobo, Larry Ossei-Mensah, Natasha Ginwala, Stuart Comer,Ā Sunjung Kim andĀ Victor Wang.

FILM

SOUTH SOUTH sustains a regular FILM programme in which we have sharedĀ iconic videos by artists including Minerva Cuevas, Bani Abidi,Ā Yinka Shonibare CBE, Coco Fusco, Ho Tzu NyenĀ and Yazan Khalili. Ā In addition, we have presented special programmes in collaboration with avid collectors of video art, such as Jim Amberson and Anurag Khanna. The FILM platform has been acknowledged for creating access to works that would otherwise not be accessible in such a democratic way and brilliantly contextualised each programme with engaging conversations that are recorded and available on our platform.

ARCHIVE

SOUTH SOUTH facilitates a community-built archive highlighting selected seminal exhibitions, texts and moments about modern and contemporary art in the Global South at galleries, not-for-profits and museums, as well as archived interview-based editorial and artist profiles. Content of the site is established through contributions from key artists, writers, curators, nonprofit organisations and gallerists. To suggest a contribution email info@south-south.art.

SOUTH SOUTH is the place to discover artists working in the Global South. It is a wellspring of information and resources about the region. It is also a vanguard platform striving to find new ways to support artists and galleries.

The initiative seeks to address an imbalance in the global cultural framework by providing a means to explore a de-centred art world within a broader geographical context.

SOUTH SOUTH features year-round programming and content. Our inaugural event SOUTH SOUTH VEZA (23 February – 7 March 2021) presented an enterprising new format for exploring artists from the Global South, with participation from 56 galleries from 30 countries across 5 continents. Explore the VEZA talks programmes Think Tank and IN DIALOGUE for cross-regional conversations between curators, artists, collectors, writers and gallerists.

At the core of SOUTH SOUTH is the Archive. This community-built archive highlights seminal exhibitions, texts and moments that contributed to an expanding imaginary of curatorial and artistic practice in the Global South.

In the Featured section, the SOUTH SOUTH team maintains an ongoing, interview-based editorial component, including conversations, essays and other texts on arts practitioners and current events related to the Global South.
