Afriart Gallery
Kampala
The Afriart Gallery online viewing room showcases artworks by Sanaa Gateja, an art veteran, Henry ‘Mzili’ Mujunga, a mid- career painter, and Richard Atugonza, an emerging sculptor. These artists represent the contemporary art scene in Kampala across generations, using their respective mediums to explore identity in a world where we are seeking to understand who we are and where we are heading. Mzili’s colorful compositions gather objects, spaces, and the existing associations to mimic the process of identity-making that he observes in his native Uganda. The figures sculpted in recycled plastic and charcoal by Richard’s hands fuse people and environment in forms that appear brittle, however, become durable through the transformation of the plastic through combustion, thus revealing a resilient character found in the new materialism of the black matter. Of his works, Sanaa Gateja says, “Life is a journey with a purpose. The message I bring is visually African. The themes I present are universally human…”
